Turuk Ko Sallah: Allowing all voices to be heard


Nestled in the serene landscapes of South Sikkim lies Turuk, a quaint village brimming with potential and aspirations. In December 2021, a group of individuals, inspired by the ‘Bato Khoju’ Workshop, embarked on a journey to facilitate change within their community. Fast forward to September 24, 2022, Turuk witnessed a pivotal event - a one-day workshop aimed at shaping a vision for the village’s future.




The Purpose and Approach

The genesis of the workshop stemmed from a collective desire to foster community engagement and empowerment. Spearheaded by the Progressive Learning Foundation (PLF) in collaboration with Turuk Gram Panchayat, the event aimed to harness the collective wisdom of Turuk’s residents. Aided by other organizations such as Architects of Sikkim, Manch, and Tikvah Media, the workshop’s approach was meticulously crafted, emphasizing inclusivity, participation, and fun. By partnering with local governance and ensuring diverse representation, the workshop sought to ignite a sense of ownership and responsibility among participants.


The Workshop Experience

From 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Turuk Community Hall buzzed with energy as residents congregated for a day of dialogue and envisioning. The workshop’s interactive format fostered meaningful conversations, allowing participants to articulate their aspirations, challenges, and strengths. Breakout sessions, organized according to wards, facilitated intimate discussions, with PLF volunteers diligently capturing insights. The atmosphere was not only engaging but also safe, ensuring every voice was heard and valued.


Goals and Guiding Principles

Beyond data collection, the workshop harbored broader objectives. It aimed to validate residents’ voices, offer support to local governance, and imbue a sense of responsibility. Guided by principles of diversity, participation, self-determination, interactivity, and fun, the workshop epitomized a holistic approach to community engagement. By nurturing inclusivity and mutual respect, it laid the groundwork for collaborative action and sustainable development.


Aspirations: Dreaming of an Ideal Turuk

The workshop commenced with a collective dream - an idealized vision of Turuk. Participants envisioned a future marked by improved education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. While addressing immediate concerns such as water shortage and poor roads, they also harbored grander aspirations, including a thriving economy and visionary leadership. The valence board adorned with images mirrored the collective hopes and dreams of Turuk’s residents.


Challenges and Strengths: Navigating the Terrain

Post-lunch, discussions delved into the nuanced landscape of challenges and strengths. Participants confronted issues ranging from governance deficiencies to infrastructural inadequacies. Yet, amidst the challenges, Turuk’s strengths shone brightly - its rich cultural heritage, resilient community spirit, and burgeoning dairy farming industry. While acknowledging the obstacles, participants fervently brainstormed solutions, propelled by a shared commitment to progress.


Moving Forward: Towards a Sustainable Future

As the sun set on the workshop, Turuk stood at a crossroads - poised for transformation. The insights gleaned from the day’s deliberations serve as a compass, guiding the village towards a sustainable future. Armed with a collective vision and a renewed sense of purpose, Turuk’s residents are primed to surmount obstacles and seize opportunities. The workshop was not merely an event but a catalyst for change, igniting a flame of hope and possibility within the community.
